As I write this article the news plays on TV in the background reporting on the latest tragedy to hit our country, the horrific shooting in Las Vegas, NV. This at the very least compels me to write about the importance of gratitude. As unfortunate as this tragedy is, it drives home the idea that we should never take anything for granted as it can all change in the blink of an eye.
We rang in Fall 2017 in horrific fashion. Notably, there were three devastating hurricanes that left thousands homeless and without basic necessities such as food and water. Many of the victims of the hurricanes were left without any possessions and with only the clothes on their backs. Nonetheless, they were all thankful for their survival and that of their loved ones. It is in times like this that we should allow for reflection and not focus on what we do not have, but instead be grateful for what we do.
We become so wrapped up with our own problems that we do not stop and pause to give thanks. Instead, people tend to focus on problems at work, paying the bills, traffic, and other issues. When we step back to see the bigger picture and compare our problems to those that have affected many in the face of tragedy, it is then we realize what really matters.
Do not take for granted the luxuries that many of us now view as necessity. Remember, it is a luxury to have a cell phone, a TV, air conditioning, the comfortable bed you sleep in at the end of a long day, or even running water.
When I lay down at night I always say a prayer and give gratitude for at least three things that happened to me that day. Whether it is something as simple as traffic moved smoothly and I made it from A to B safely, it is important that I find gratitude for that.
Never take for granted all that you do have instead of focusing on the lack of. We are truly living in a country that is blessed more than anywhere else. Take a moment daily to count your blessing and give thanks to anyone who helps to make our world a better place. During this time, it is perhaps most important to reach out to the courageous men and women in uniform who serve and protect us day in and day out.
In these dark times, I find comfort in the fact of seeing people stepping up to help one another erasing all barriers, such as race, and reminding me we can be good people.
The holidays are now quickly approaching and we take the time to make meals special and share time with our loved ones. I leave you with this- try to do spend that time year-round. Hold your kids and family a little tighter, tell your loved ones what they mean to you and always remember that life is so very precious and can change with no notice.
This was written OVER THE TOP WELL.
